Claudia Barrett – Founder, Q Grader, SCAA Certified Instructor

A self proclaimed coffee and baseball geek, Claudia lives in Bedford, NH with her husband Jim, and, two children. A native New Englander, Claudia rode out the coffee wave in the 1990′s in Washington DC where she managed and helped launch a national coffee chain on the East Coast, as well as, managed coffee quality and customer happiness for a local favorite coffee roastery. Her roasting apprenticeship was done at a small whole sale company called “The Daily Roast”.  In April of 2013 she became a  Licensed Q Grader.  Licensed Q Graders are professional cuppers accredited by the Coffee Quality Institute.  Q Graders must pass a rigorous three-day exam to earn their certification, comprising of 22 sections on coffee related subjects, such as green grading, roast identification, coffee cupping, sensory skills and sensory triangulation. There are currently only 2,500 Licensed Q Graders worldwide; roughly only 300 in the United States. She is also an instructor for the Specialty Coffee Association of America.

Claudia holds her degree in English from William Smith College. She believes her liberal arts education was the greatest gift toward her personal growth. An avid hiker and supporter of the Appalachian Mountain Club, Claudia is working on red lining the White Mountains and has climbed all 48 peaks in the White Mountains. The last fact you might need to know is, three rescue dogs round out her pack.

Blake Corbit

Blaké the barista, roaster, Roast Lab Manager, and just someone who loves coffee. 3 years into the coffee industry, he’s moved his way up to learning everything he can about coffee. Born and raised in Milford, New Hampshire. He’s made coffee all his life for his family, but only four years ago did he fully understand the true awesomeness of coffee. He helped a local start up coffee shop with organizational tactics and consistency. Blake is not only a lover of quality coffee, but desires to replicate it repeatedly. Not only will he help you get a great cup of coffee, he aspires to make it that great every time.

Blake is a BGA (Barista Guild of America) level 1 Barista. He went through three days of training and a day of testing comprised of two separate tests to qualify. There are roughly 2,500 certified level 1 baristas worldwide. He aspires to achieve other coffee certifications to learn more about coffee, and share his passion.

Blake is an avid cupper and is training for his Q grader exam. For more information on the Q grader exam, see Claudia’s profile.

Jacob Ryder

Jacob fell in love with coffee during his stint as a barista. After some time out of the industry, he returned to pursue his passion in a new way: roasting! Always a student, Jacob never stops searching for ways to make coffee better. He’s inclined towards the sciences and strives to apply all he’s learned--and all he will learn--to create consistently fantastic coffee. The first person to call when the digital world comes crashing down, Jacob is also an impassioned computer geek who loves applying his tech skills to the roasting process.

When he’s not in the roast lab or messing with his computer, you’ll probably find him reading.

Tom Manion

Coffee enthusiast, barista and willing participant in the active learning process we call life. Though he’s drank coffee for much of his life, it wasn’t until the first sip of third wave coffee met his palate that he knew coffee had it’s own culture. Since then, he has aimed to increase his skills in coffee knowledge, preparation, and roasting to help provide the same experience to the world at large. He is currently training for his Level 1 Certification from the SCAA.

Born in Leominster MA, Tom found his way to Newmarket NH where he currently studies Astrophysics at the University of New Hampshire. He also has two years education in Automotive Technology. When he isn’t making coffee, studying or rolling dice at his weekly D&D game, maintaining and improving his car is where his heart lies.

James N. Barrett III

Bean Counter, CEO, and tea drinker of all things…

Jim holds several degrees in all sorts of stuff but we rely on his Accounting degree and his MBA the most.  Jim traveled extensively in far away coffee lands, fighting evil monkeys with his whip until one day he realized how much fun it would be to get tasked non stop about accounting issues and roaster repair.  Claudia is thinking about nominating him for Most Supportive Husband EVER but then she falls on the ground laughing.

Senior roasting plant dog in charge of all things olfactory and also works as Chief of Security protecting us from his number one nemesis, the UPS man.  Grover loves long walks on the beach and as boss as he is with all the other dogs he is very much afraid of the evil coffee grinder.  But that’s okay.  He brings a whole lot of cuteness into the roasting plant.  That Grover?  Total keeper.
